Furman University Japanese Garden, Japanese botanical garden at Furman University, South Carolina
The Furman University Japanese Garden is a designed landscape with stone pathways, water features, and traditional layout elements spread across the campus in Greenville. It includes an historic temple from Nagoya that was reconstructed here and a small teahouse for visitors to experience.
An ancient temple originally located in Nagoya was brought to South Carolina in 2004 and reconstructed by Japanese craftsmen over time. The garden was then developed around this reassembled structure to integrate it into the university landscape.
The garden reflects the partnership between Furman University and Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, connecting academic worlds through plants and designed space. Visitors observe how two cultures come together and enrich each other through education.
The garden is open to visitors without admission fees during daylight hours, making it convenient to drop in anytime. Parking information should be obtained from campus resources before visiting, as availability may vary depending on the day and time.
The temple consists of about 2,400 individual pieces that Japanese craftsmen carefully reassembled piece by piece. This remarkable reconstruction showcases the precision of traditional Japanese building techniques in a contemporary academic setting.
