Furnace Town Living Heritage Museum, Industrial heritage museum in Snow Hill, Maryland
Furnace Town Living Heritage Museum is an outdoor museum set on about ten acres with historic buildings including a blacksmith shop, print shop, weaver house, and woodworker's shop. At the center stands the Nassawango Iron Furnace, which remains Maryland's only surviving bog-ore furnace from that period.
This site grew around an iron furnace from the eighteen hundreds that supplied metal goods to the surrounding region. Over time, the location became a working community with multiple trades and businesses, playing an important role in Maryland's early industrial development.
Staff dressed in period clothing demonstrate traditional trades and crafts throughout the day, showing how work shaped community life in a nineteenth-century industrial village. These hands-on demonstrations help visitors connect directly with everyday practices from that era.
The site is located in a nature preserve and is easily accessible by car. Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes since the grounds are explored on foot and paths wind through wooded areas.
A walking trail runs through a swamp forest with cypress trees, connecting the industrial buildings to the natural landscape beyond. This path shows how the working site existed within and depended on the local ecosystem.
