Gambrill House

Gambrill House is a three-story brick residence near Monocacy Battlefield featuring a mansard roof and central tower in Second Empire style. The property sits at 4801 Urbana Pike and now serves the National Park Service as a training center for historic preservation education.

James H. Gambrill built this residence in 1872 during his success as a miller, incorporating advanced features like gas lighting and running water. The home was constructed during a period of significant economic growth in the region after the war.

The house shows how successful mill owners lived after the Civil War and what modern conveniences they could afford. Gas lighting and running water were still uncommon features in homes of that period.
