Gildersleeve Mountain, Mountain summit in Kirtland, United States.
Gildersleeve Mountain is a peak located within Chapin Forest Reservation near Kirtland and rises to approximately 1,160 feet (354 meters) above sea level. The summit sits within a 160-hectare (403-acre) nature preserve that contains mixed forest habitats and several interconnected trails.
During the 19th century the peak served as a sandstone quarry that supplied stone for building the Kirtland Temple and other local structures. Quarrying operations left geological marks that remain visible in the landscape today.
The summit marks the beginning of the Allegheny Plateau, representing a geological transition point between two distinct land formations in Ohio.
The site offers about 10 kilometers of trails for walking, biking, and horseback riding through different forest types and terrain. Trails are well-marked, and visitors can explore different sections based on their interests and fitness level.
The peak hosts several rare dragonfly species, including the tiger spiketail that was first discovered here. These insects thrive in wetland areas within the reservation, making the location biologically significant.
