Squire's Castle, Gatehouse in North Chagrin Reservation, Ohio.
Squire's Castle is a stone gatehouse in the North Chagrin Reservation with three floors and walls built from local Euclid bluestone. The windows originally held decorative leaded glass, showing fine craftsmanship throughout.
Feargus B. Squire, a Standard Oil Company executive, built this gatehouse in 1897 as the first part of his planned English country estate spanning about 500 acres. The main mansion was never completed due to difficulties obtaining building materials and labor.
The structure shows Romanesque Revival features with design elements from German and English country houses of that era. This style blend is rarely seen in the region.
The site sits within Cleveland Metroparks with several hiking trails and areas for picnics and group gatherings. It's best visited during daylight hours, and bringing proper footwear for the surrounding trails is a good idea.
The gatehouse was originally just the entrance building for a much larger mansion that was never built. Today it stands alone as a remnant of an ambitious Gilded Age plan that remained unfinished.
