Golden Domes, Meditation domes in Fairfield, United States
The Golden Domes are two geodesic structures with golden roofs located on the Maharishi International University campus. Each dome covers approximately 2,300 square meters (25,000 square feet) and rises about 10 meters (35 feet) high, with spacious interior areas for meditation groups and additional spaces for yoga and changing facilities.
The first dome opened in December 1979 following a World Peace Assembly, while the second was completed in 1981 on the site of a former campus baseball field. Both structures underwent major renovations between 2001 and 2005, which included new entrances, perimeter fencing, and expanded interior facilities.
These structures serve as centers for group meditation and transcendental meditation practice, forming the spiritual heart of the university's programs. Visitors experience spaces designed specifically to support focused inner work and collective practice.
These structures function primarily as meditation spaces for university members and may have specific access guidelines. It is best to check ahead about visiting arrangements, as the spaces are regularly used for group practice sessions.
Each dome is crowned with a 2.3 meter (7.5 foot) kalasha sculpture made of acrylic resin, installed in 1997 to represent traditional architectural symbolism. This unusual finial makes the buildings recognizable from a distance and emphasizes their cultural significance.
