Lake Darling State Park, State park with 302-acre lake in Washington County, United States.
Lake Darling State Park is an Iowa state park in Washington County, centered around a lake surrounded by woodlands and open fields. The park includes hiking trails, a boat ramp, fishing spots, camping areas, and cabin rentals along the shoreline.
The park was established in 1950 and named after J.N. Ding Darling, a cartoonist from Iowa who spent decades pushing for the protection of wetlands and wildlife across the country. His advocacy helped shape early American conservation policy.
The park sits in a rural part of Iowa where fishing is a long-standing local pastime, and the lake draws families and neighbors together on weekends. Visitors can notice this easy, unhurried pace as people set up chairs along the shore and watch their lines in the water.
The park is most accessible and active from spring through early fall, when trails and the water are easy to use. Cabins with kitchens are available for overnight stays, alongside camping spots with electric hookups for those who prefer to bring their own gear.
Along the south shore, there is a paved fishing trail about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long that was built to give people with limited mobility full access to the waterfront. It is one of the few fully paved accessible fishing routes found in an Iowa state park.
