Green Island, Lake island in Lake Erie, Ohio, United States.
Green Island is a small lake island in Lake Erie, lying southwest of Put-in-Bay in Ohio, made up largely of limestone formations covered by native vegetation. It sits entirely surrounded by water and is visible from the nearby shore and passing boats.
A lighthouse was built on the island in the mid-1800s to guide ships through this stretch of Lake Erie. It operated for several decades before the island eventually became a protected natural area.
The name of the island comes from the thick vegetation that covers its surface, making it look green when seen from the water. Today it serves as a protected bird sanctuary, home to nesting colonies of herons and cormorants.
The island is not open to the public and can only be seen from the water or from the shore near Put-in-Bay. A boat trip in the area offers a good view without any need to land.
During his time on the island, lighthouse keeper William Gordon built his own radio set and used it to pick up broadcasts from stations far away across the lake. This made the isolated posting feel a little less cut off from the rest of the world.
