Godey Lime Kilns, Historical lime kiln in Foggy Bottom, United States.
The Godey Lime Kilns is a stone structure with two large ovens standing beside Rock Creek Parkway. The construction shows how this facility once produced lime and plaster, with thick walls and open chambers still visible today.
William H. Godey built the kilns in the mid-1800s as part of Washington's industrial growth. Operations ended later as the city changed and this style of production was no longer needed.
The kilns show the working history of this place, where laborers processed raw materials needed for the expanding city. They remind us of a time when such factories stood in the middle of town and shaped daily life.
The site is near L Street NW and 26th Street, making it reachable by car. Keep in mind the location sits under a bridge and has changing conditions depending on the season.
Raw stone came directly to the site via an old canal and was processed at night. This nighttime activity was part of the earlier work rhythm of the city, which differed greatly from today.
