Hans Schuler Studio and Residence
Hans Schuler Studio and Residence, Historic artist residence in Baltimore, Maryland.
Hans Schuler Studio and Residence is a brick building in Baltimore that combines a one-story studio space with a tall two-story residence topped by a mansard roof. The studio section features a recessed skylight for natural lighting while the main house showcases period architectural details throughout its structure.
The artist built his purpose-designed studio in 1906 after gaining recognition in the international art world. He later expanded the residence section in 1912 to better accommodate his growing household and artistic practice.
The property now functions as The Schuler School of Fine Arts, continuing the artistic legacy through education in sculpture, painting, and drawing.
The building is situated on East Lafayette Avenue in Baltimore where visitors can see the original studio and residence arranged side by side. The interior spaces retain their working character with original fixtures and layout preserved from the early 1900s.
The studio features a 24-foot-high ceiling with large sliding doors that open the entire wall to the adjacent space. This arrangement reflects a deliberate design for working with oversized sculptures that required both vertical clearance and flexible room configurations.
