Originally established in 1885 as the Women's College of Baltimore, the institution operated at this location until relocating to Towson in the 1950s.
The buildings represent the evolution of women's education in Maryland, with structures designed by notable architect Stanford White during the late 1800s.
The complex, located between W. 25th Street and North Avenue, includes the Baltimore Lab School and various commercial establishments open for public visits.
The district received a National Register of Historic Places designation in 1978 and expanded its protected area by seventy-five acres in 1994.
