Haystack Mountain

Haystack Mountain is a peak reaching 3,445 feet (1,050 meters) in the Green Mountains of Wilmington. The summit can be accessed by maintained trails and offers views across the surrounding Vermont valleys from the ridgeline.

The mountain was first scientifically documented in 1861 when Edward Hitchcock recorded it as one of southern Vermont's highest peaks. This early geological study helped establish the region as an area of geographic interest.

The Hermitage Club operates a lodge on the mountain where visitors gather for winter activities and seasonal events. This facility has become a social hub for people seeking mountain experiences throughout the year.

Maintained trails provide access to the summit, with routes varying in difficulty depending on the starting point. Fall and spring offer ideal hiking conditions, while winter requires appropriate gear for snow and ice.

The mountain contains extensive ski terrain on its northeast side that draws winter sports enthusiasts. Residential areas on the southeast slopes show how the mountain has been developed for both recreation and permanent living.
