Hartford Water Tower

The Hartford Water Tower is a steel structure at the intersection of Pine and 1st Streets with four latticed legs supporting a bowl-shaped tank topped by a cone. The facility occupies less than one acre and contains a central pipe system that handles water pumping and storage for the town.

Chicago Bridge & Iron Company built this tower in 1936 using Public Works Administration funding from the Great Depression recovery programs. The project was part of a nationwide effort to develop infrastructure in hundreds of American communities.

The tower shows how small towns modernized their infrastructure in the 1930s with federal support during economic hardship. For Hartford, this structure represented progress and growth when resources were scarce.

The tower sits in a central location in town and is easy to spot from the street. Visitors can view the structure from outside and get a close look at the engineering work from that era.

This is the only surviving Public Works Administration water tower in Sebastian County, making it a rare example of that era's engineering. It received National Register status in 2008, recognizing its importance to local history.
