Harding Tomb, Presidential memorial in Marion, United States
The Harding Tomb is a monument in Marion, Ohio, consisting of a circular colonnade of white marble that forms the burial place of the 29th President of the United States. The structure rises on a gentle hill and is surrounded by manicured lawns crossed by wide walkways.
After President Warren G. Harding died in 1923, a national fundraising campaign began to build a fitting burial monument for him. The dedication took place in June 1931 in the presence of President Hoover and other high-ranking officials.
The central interior shows two large black granite sarcophagi where President Harding and his wife Florence were laid to rest. Visitors enter a quiet circular space where the simple arrangement of the burial sites invites silent reflection.
The grounds are freely accessible during daylight hours and can be explored on foot by visitors. Parking spaces are located near the entrance, and from there it is only a short walk to the monument.
The columns are arranged without a roof over the central area, so rain and snow can fall directly onto the burial sites. This design consciously follows ancient Greek temple architecture, where some sanctuaries remained open to the sky.
