Morrow County Courthouse, County courthouse in Mount Gilead, United States.
Morrow County Courthouse is a brick building with Greek Revival elements, topped by a prominent tower housing a clock and bell above the main entrance. It stands at the corner of Main Street and High Street in the heart of Mount Gilead.
The building opened in 1854, just after Morrow County formed in 1848, consolidating territories previously divided among five separate counties. This new courthouse helped organize the emerging region's government.
The building has served as a community gathering space housing the county's first medical association and hosting a Universalist congregation until 1861. This multipurpose function shows how courthouse buildings anchored public life in smaller towns.
The building sits in the downtown core and is easily walkable from surrounding streets. Visitors should come during daytime hours when administrative offices are open, as some areas may not be accessible outside business hours.
In the 1880s many wanted to tear down the structure, but the town chose modifications that preserved its original character instead. This practical approach saved an important piece of local architecture from demolition.
