Herkimer Home State Historic Site, Georgian mansion in Little Falls, United States.
Herkimer Home is a Georgian-style mansion situated on a 160-acre estate overlooking the Mohawk River. The building dates from 1764 and its rooms are furnished with period pieces and objects from that era.
General Nicholas Herkimer, who led hundreds of militia fighters during the Revolutionary War, died in 1777 shortly after the Battle of Oriskany. This mansion was his home and survives as a reminder of that period.
The mansion shows how wealthy families lived during colonial times and reveals the design choices they made for their homes. Walking through the rooms, you can see how the family organized their daily life and what they valued in their surroundings.
Visitors can explore the mansion through guided tours offered from spring through fall. The grounds are relatively flat and easy to walk, though sturdy shoes are helpful for the property.
Visitors can find General Herkimer's burial site on the grounds, connecting the location to his personal legacy. Remnants of an original Erie Canal lock also lie on the property, linking transportation history with the wider story of the region.
