Salisbury Center Bridge, Covered bridge in Herkimer County, United States.
Salisbury Center Bridge is a covered wooden road bridge over Spruce Creek in Herkimer County, New York State. It has vertical board siding and a gable roof, and it spans roughly 42 feet (about 13 meters) over the creek below.
The bridge was built in 1875 using the Burr Truss system, a framing method widely adopted for timber bridges across the northeastern United States during the 1800s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, recognizing its age and condition.
The bridge takes its name from the small hamlet of Salisbury Center that surrounds it, and locals still use it as a daily crossing. Walking or driving through it gives a direct sense of how rural communities once moved between fields and homes.
The bridge sits on Fairview Road and remains an active crossing, so vehicles may pass through at any time. Those who want to stop and look around should stay aware of traffic, as the passage is narrow and shared with cars.
This is the only covered bridge still standing in Herkimer County, which once had several of them. The heavy timber frame is visible from inside as you walk through, showing a way of building that few craftsmen still know how to do today.
