Holmes Creek Covered Bridge

Holmes Creek Covered Bridge is a single-lane wooden structure that crosses Holmes Creek in Charlotte, Vermont, located on Lake Road. The bridge measures approximately 41 feet long and 12 feet wide with a clearance height of about 8 feet 3 inches.

The bridge was built with a King post truss design combined with a tied arch structure and gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. A major rehabilitation project in 1993 strengthened the structure to handle modern traffic.

The structure was designed by local Selectmen to allow farm wagons and heavy agricultural equipment to pass safely through. This practical approach shows how rural communities shaped their infrastructure around daily work and livelihood.

The structure has a clearance height restriction of about 8 feet 3 inches, which limits access for taller vehicles. Visitors with large vehicles should plan ahead or use alternative routes to reach the surrounding area.

This structure sits at the lowest elevation of any covered bridge in Vermont and stands near former apple orchards operated by the Holmes family in the 1800s. The proximity to these historic orchards reflects the farming heritage that shaped the region.
