Hotel Kewanee, hotel in Kewanee, Illinois
Hotel Kewanee is a four-story brick building completed in 1916. The structure has over 100 rooms and features Classical Revival style with symmetrical forms and classical details throughout its facade.
Designed by architects Hewitt and Emerson from Peoria, the hotel was originally called the Parkside Hotel. After renovation in the 1950s, it became known as Hotel Kewanee and served as a major community gathering place through its ballroom and events.
The name comes from the town of Kewanee itself. The building displays classical elegance from the early 20th century and continues to define the appearance of downtown today.
The building sits on North Chestnut Street in downtown and is located near shops and other historic sites. Visitors can easily observe the exterior architecture, as it stands out as a notable structure in the area.
Radio station WKEI operated its studios on the fourth floor from 1961 to 1981. The building later converted to senior citizen apartments now called Parkside Apartments, transforming its purpose while preserving its classical structure.
