Hitchcock House, Historical house in Austin neighborhood, Chicago, US

Hitchcock House is an Italianate residence on West Ohio Street featuring tall windows, a low hipped roof, and a broad front porch. The structure displays typical design characteristics from the late 1800s with these classical architectural elements throughout.

The residence was built in 1871 for railroad executive Charles Hitchcock and ranks among the oldest surviving homes in Austin. It was constructed when this neighborhood functioned as a separate municipality before merging with Chicago.

The house displays Italianate design elements that became fashionable among Chicago's wealthy families during the 1870s. These architectural choices show how European villa styles influenced domestic building practices in the city.

The building received official designation as a Chicago Landmark in 1992 and serves as an important example of 19th-century residential design. Visitors can view the architectural details from the exterior and learn about construction practices of that period.

The residence dates from when Austin was an independent railroad suburb before becoming part of Chicago. This railroad heritage remains visible in the neighborhood's character today.
