Hjemkomst Center, Cultural center and museum in Moorhead, Minnesota, United States.
The Hjemkomst Center is a museum in Moorhead displaying a full-scale replica of a Viking ship and a reproduction of a Hopperstad Stave Church inside a glass-walled building. The layout lets visitors walk around and examine both structures easily from multiple angles.
A man named Robert Asp started building a Viking-style ship in 1974 at a local shipyard. After he passed away, his family completed the project and sailed the finished ship to Norway in 1982.
The center displays how Norwegian immigrants shaped life in the Red River Valley through everyday objects and family stories. You can see the connection between their traditions and the way settlers built their communities here.
The museum sits near downtown and is easy to reach by car or on foot. Plan for at least two hours to look closely at both the ship and the church.
The ship was not just built but actually sailed across the Atlantic to Norway, a rare journey for a modern-made vessel of this type. This voyage turned it into more than just a display, but a working example of historical craftsmanship.
