Hyattsville Historic District

Hyattsville Historic District is a residential area containing approximately 600 structures across a large area, featuring historic dwellings with brick and fieldstone foundations. The area extends between the railroad tracks on one side and encompasses multiple residential streets throughout the neighborhood.

The area was founded in 1845 and developed into a significant residential community in the region. By the late 1800s, it became one of the few cities in the county that had attracted a growing population.

The district displays a range of architectural styles from different periods, including Second Empire, Queen Anne, Italianate, and Victorian homes. This variety reflects how the community evolved over time and attracted residents with different tastes and means.

Visitors can explore the neighborhood on foot, with different areas easily accessible along the main streets and residential avenues. The location sits in an established residential area with clear orientation and good walking paths.

In 1892, this location introduced an unusual tax system that applied only to land values rather than buildings. This early experiment with an alternative taxation method was quite distinctive for its time.
