Kings Theatre, Movie palace in Flatbush, Brooklyn, United States.
The Kings Theatre is a French Baroque-style performance hall in Flatbush, Brooklyn, with seating for more than 3,000 people. The interior shows high vaulted ceilings, gilded plasterwork, and red velvet chairs spread across multiple tiers.
The building opened in 1929 as one of five Loew's Wonder Theaters and remained closed for nearly four decades after shuttering in 1977. The full restoration completed in 2015 brought back the original decorative elements.
The name recalls a time when Brooklyn had its own royalty in the movie palace business, and today visitors experience everything from stand-up evenings to classical dance. The Flatbush neighborhood brings together people from around the world, and the hall mirrors this diversity through its rotating program.
The entrance sits on Flatbush Avenue near the corner with Tilden Avenue, and the surrounding area offers restaurants and shops for browsing before or after the show. Seating spreads across orchestra and upper tiers, with later arrivals often placed higher up.
The architects drew inspiration from Versailles and the Paris Opera, and many of the 1929 ornaments were restored piece by piece during the renovation. Even the original chandeliers hang again in their old spots, casting warm light across the gilded walls.
