Lake View Cemetery, cemetery in Brockport, New York
Lake View Cemetery is a burial ground in Brockport, New York, spanning a large area with curved pathways that wind through trees and open grassland. The site holds about 5000 graves, a small pond, a cast iron fountain, and a chapel building from the Romanesque Revival period featuring rounded arches.
The cemetery was established in 1891, though the area previously had an older burial ground called Beach Ridge organized in 1828 that was later merged with it. In 2009 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its architectural design and regional historical importance.
The cemetery takes its name from the nearby water body and reflects how the local community values natural settings for remembrance. Visitors notice families coming on special days like Memorial Day to leave flowers and honor their loved ones.
The cemetery is located north of Brockport on the east side of Lake Road and is easily accessible. The grounds offer stone pathways for walking, tree shade throughout, and occasional benches for resting while visiting.
In the 1930s, members of the Daughters of the American Revolution documented many tombstones and recorded information about early inhabitants. Among those buried here are veterans from the Revolutionary War and Civil War era, their graves preserving the region's history in stone.
