Lake Wallenpaupack, Reservoir and lake in Pike and Wayne Counties, United States

Lake Wallenpaupack is a reservoir in northeastern Pennsylvania, located between Pike County and Wayne County. The water surface covers roughly 2,300 hectares with a shoreline that runs about 52 miles (84 kilometers) and a maximum depth near 60 feet (18 meters).

The Pennsylvania Power and Light Corporation built the reservoir in 1926 to supply electricity for the growing industries in the region. Around 2,700 workers constructed the dam and Tafton Dike, submerging several small communities in the process.

The name Wallenpaupack comes from the Lenape language and refers to water that moves with changing speed. This term recalls the original landscape with its shifting currents before the artificial lake took shape.

Six recreation areas surround the reservoir and provide forest trails, camping facilities, and boat launches for visitors. These sites remain open year-round, though some areas offer reduced amenities during winter months.

An underground pipe system measuring about 13 feet (4 meters) in diameter channels water to turbines that generate enough electricity for several thousand homes. This facility has operated for nearly a century, combining power production with shoreline recreation areas.
