Lincoln-Tallman House
Lincoln-Tallman House, Historic mansion in Janesville, United States.
The Lincoln-Tallman House is a large mansion built in the mid-1800s in Janesville, Wisconsin, constructed with quality brick and featuring black walnut doors with carved wooden panels. The multi-story structure preserves Victorian architectural details and room layouts from that period.
William Tallman, a major landowner in this region, had the house built between 1857 and 1858 to manage his extensive Wisconsin properties. The building arose during a period when Wisconsin was developing rapidly and wealthy property owners displayed their influence through such grand residences.
The house shows how wealthy Wisconsin families lived and arranged their spaces, with original furnishings and objects from the 1800s still in place. The way rooms were designed reflects the daily habits and values of the time.
The house is maintained by the Rock County Historical Society and offers regular guided tours through multiple floors. It is wise to plan ahead, as tours are scheduled and the building features stairs and various levels to navigate.
Abraham Lincoln stayed overnight here in October 1859 while traveling through the region, marking the only known instance of him sleeping in a Wisconsin home. This fleeting connection to one of America's most famous figures makes the house memorable for many visitors.
