Letter Carriers' Monument, Bronze sculpture in downtown Milwaukee, United States.
The Letter Carriers' Monument is a bronze sculpture located at North 2nd Street and Plankinton Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. It depicts three postal workers of varying sizes and appearances standing together on a black granite base.
The monument was erected in 1989 to commemorate a century since the founding of the National Association of Letter Carriers. This organization grew out of efforts by postal workers in Milwaukee who advocated for better working conditions.
The three figures depict postal workers from different eras, showing how this profession has evolved and the changing face of who performs this work. Visitors can observe the shift in uniforms and appearance across the decades.
The monument sits in Postman's Porch, a small pocket park outfitted with seating areas for visitors to rest and linger. You can view the bronze details and craftsmanship clearly during daylight hours when the light is best.
Artist Elliot Offner developed the original model for this sculpture while serving as a visiting artist in Cambridge, England. What began as a creative project overseas was later cast in bronze and installed in Milwaukee.
