You Rise Above the World, Abstract sculpture on Milwaukee Riverwalk, US
You Rise Above the World is a red aluminum sculpture standing vertically along the Milwaukee Riverwalk, composed of five connected sections with varying geometric forms. The structure rises prominently above pedestrians who walk past it near Kilbourn Avenue.
The sculpture was installed in 1998 when Milwaukee was transforming its waterfront with contemporary public art. It became part of the river's redesign during a period when the city was revitalizing its downtown areas.
The work references Miles Davis's quintet from the late 1950s and how its five musicians created music together. Each section of this sculpture represents one of those collaborators, showing how separate voices come together as one.
The sculpture is easily accessible from the Riverwalk and visible from both sides of the Milwaukee River. Walking along the waterfront path allows you to view it from different angles and appreciate how it stands above the surrounding area.
Each of the five aluminum sections maintains its own distinct geometric shape while forming a continuous vertical line. This balance between individual parts and unified whole reflects the idea that different talents create something stronger together.
