Grohmann Museum, Art museum on Milwaukee School of Engineering campus, United States
The Grohmann Museum on the Milwaukee School of Engineering campus houses a collection of more than 1,900 artworks spread across three floors. The galleries feature paintings and sculptures that depict human labor and work throughout different centuries and regions.
The museum opened in 2007 after Milwaukee businessman Eckhart Grohmann donated his personal art collection to the engineering school. Grohmann had spent decades assembling works that focused on depicting human labor and the dignity of work.
The collection shows how different artists across Europe and America have portrayed human labor and daily work throughout history. Walking through the galleries, you notice how the paintings and sculptures capture the dignity and struggle of ordinary people from different time periods.
The museum operates on a schedule that is more generous on weekdays than weekends, so plan accordingly when you visit. The rooftop garden with sculptures is accessible and offers a nice view of the campus and surroundings.
German artist Hans Dieter Tylle created custom stained glass windows and murals specifically for the museum's interior spaces. These works are notable because they blur the line between the building itself and the art it contains.
