Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist
Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist, Historic church in Milwaukee, United States.
The Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist is a historic worship building in Milwaukee combining red brick with decorative sandstone details. The structure displays Gothic and Romanesque architectural features, and inside visitors find original amber-colored dormer windows along with the distinctive green-tiled fireplace in the reading room.
The building was designed and constructed by architect Elmer Grey in 1902. It gained national recognition through the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and received local historic designation in Milwaukee in 1983.
The congregation grew from Wisconsin's second Christian Science group, which formed after Dr. Silas Sawyer learned Mary Baker Eddy's teachings in Boston. Today visitors can experience the original reading room with its green-tiled fireplace, which reflects the spiritual practices of this movement.
The building sits at 1036 North Van Buren Street and is walkable from downtown Milwaukee. Hours can vary depending on current programming, so it is best to check ahead before planning a visit to see the interior spaces.
The building now serves as home to Brew City Church, showing how historic religious structures can adapt to serve new congregations. This new use keeps the architectural heritage alive while maintaining the space as an active place of worship.
