Astor on the Lake, Historic hotel in Yankee Hill, Milwaukee, United States.
Astor on the Lake is an eight-story Neoclassical building located at 924 E. Juneau Avenue in Yankee Hill, near the waterfront. The gray limestone facade displays French Classical details, and the structure has an E-shaped layout created by a later addition to the original design.
The building was designed in 1920 by architect Herbert W. Tullgren for developer Oscar Brachman. A major expansion followed in 1925, adding to the original structure and creating the current E-shaped form.
The building sits prominently along the lakefront and reflects Milwaukee's aspirations for grand urban architecture in the early 1900s. Visitors can observe the French Classical details carved into the limestone facade, which express the refined tastes of that era.
The building is located near the waterfront and within walking distance of downtown Milwaukee. Today it operates as an apartment building, so public access to interiors is limited, but the exterior facade and stonework are visible from the street.
A major fire in 1935 caused substantial damage to the building and forced emergency evacuation of residents living there. The incident remains an important chapter in Milwaukee's local history.
