Lockkeeper's House, C & O Canal Extension
Lockkeeper's House, C & O Canal Extension, Federal architecture building in Constitution Gardens, United States.
The Lockkeeper's House stands as a stone structure measuring 18 feet by 32 feet, featuring symmetrical windows and restored brick chimneys at its current location.
Built in 1837, this residence served as a toll collection point and management center for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Extension until its abandonment in 1855.
The structure represents early American maritime commerce and transportation systems, marking the intersection of waterway development in the capital during the 19th century.
Following restoration in 2018, visitors can access educational exhibits about canal operations and regional transportation history within the 350-square-foot space.
In 2017, engineers moved the entire 110-ton stone building 36 feet south and 35 feet west using hydraulic systems to protect it from traffic.
