Manitowoc Breakwater Light

Manitowoc Breakwater Light is a steel lighthouse standing about 12 meters tall at the entrance to Manitowoc Harbor on Lake Michigan. It operates as an active navigation beacon, guiding vessels safely through the harbor entrance with its white light.

The current structure was built in 1918 to replace an older fog signal station at the harbor entrance. It represents the evolution of maritime navigation technology in this region during the early 20th century.

The original Fresnel lens from this structure is displayed in the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, showing how the community values its maritime past. Local people often visit the harbor to remember the lighthouse's role in protecting fishing boats and cargo ships.

The lighthouse is best viewed from the harbor area or nearby scenic viewpoints that are freely accessible to visitors. Keep in mind that access to the structure itself is restricted for safety reasons, but the exterior view from shore is worthwhile.

The name Manitowoc comes from the Native American word Manidoowaak, meaning 'dwelling of the spirit,' referring to the natural features of the bay. This heritage reminds visitors of the deeper story behind the location and its landscape.
