St. Lawrence Catholic Church

St. Lawrence Catholic Church is a Gothic Revival structure built with cream-colored brick walls on a stone foundation and topped by a distinctive tall steeple. Inside, the space features colorful stained glass windows and religious artwork that decorate the walls throughout the nave and sanctuary.

Construction began in 1892 based on a design by Milwaukee architect Jon Paulu, who created a notable example of Gothic Revival architecture. The building gained recognition with its addition to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, marking its importance to the region's heritage.

The church served as the spiritual center for Czech immigrant families who settled in this area and shaped their community around it. You can still sense this heritage through the way the space is arranged and decorated for worship.

The church remains an active worship space serving the local parish community with regular religious services throughout the year. Visitors should be respectful of the active worship environment and dress appropriately when entering this sacred space.

Artist William Scheer painted frescoes depicting Christ's life in 1912, which Czech painter Louis Shrovnal carefully restored in 1957 to preserve their detail. These restored wall paintings stand out as some of the most striking artistic features visitors encounter inside the building.
