Rawley Point Light

Rawley Point Light is a lighthouse on the shore of Lake Michigan with a steel skeletal framework. The structure uses a large glass lens system that projects light across the water to guide passing ships.

The first light station was built in 1853 with a simple design and underwent significant rebuilding over the decades. The current steel tower came into service in 1894 using materials from an earlier lighthouse structure.

The lighthouse serves as a guiding landmark for ships on Lake Michigan and shapes the character of this coastline. Visitors can experience firsthand why this structure remains important to local maritime traditions and regional identity.

The lighthouse sits within a state forest surrounded by hiking trails that wind through evergreen woods. Visitors should prepare for uneven ground and changeable weather, especially during colder months.

Parts of the steel framework came from an older lighthouse in Chicago, making this structure a blend of different maritime periods. This reuse of equipment shows how valuable and long-lasting these structures were meant to be.
