Mansfield Training School and Hospital

The Mansfield Training School and Hospital spans 350 acres and contains more than 50 buildings featuring Greek Revival architecture elements from the early 1900s.

Founded in 1860 as the Connecticut School for Imbeciles, the institution merged with the Connecticut Colony for Epileptics in 1917 to create a large medical campus.

The facility operated as a residential treatment center until 1993, reflecting the evolution of mental health care practices throughout the twentieth century.

The buildings remain closed to the public, with sections of the property now under the management of the University of Connecticut since 1994.

During peak operations in 1969, the institution housed 1,609 residents and employed 875 staff members across its extensive medical campus.
