Temple B'Nai Israel, Beaux-Arts synagogue and former Masonic temple in New Britain, Connecticut

The Temple B'Nai Israel on West Main Street exhibits Neo-Classical Revival architecture with symmetrical proportions, detailed stonework, and large gathering spaces.

Built in 1929 as a Masonic hall, the building was purchased by the Aheyu B'Nai Israel congregation in 1940 during the financial constraints of the Great Depression.

The structure represents the evolution of New Britain's Jewish community, which began as Orthodox in 1889 and later reorganized under Conservative Judaism in 1924.

The building contains multiple meeting rooms, offices, and assembly spaces that served both Masonic and religious functions throughout its operational history.

The Torah scrolls from this synagogue found new purposes at various Connecticut college Hillel organizations after its closure in 2007.
