Maces Spring, human settlement in Virginia, United States of America
Maces Spring is a small community in Scott County, Virginia, located along Route 614 in a valley called Poor Valley. The settlement consists today of a few houses and a Methodist churchyard, with the most notable sites connected to the Carter Family history, including a former home, the old church, and the Carter Fold, a music venue on Clinch Mountain.
A.P. Carter was born in Maces Spring and brought his wife Sara here in 1914, where they started their family. The Carter Family was formed in 1927 and shaped country music history through their recordings, with their roots beginning in this small community.
The A.P. Carter Highway runs through the community, named after one of the family's founding members. Mount Vernon Methodist Church, where family members are buried, remains a place where visitors can feel the connection between faith and family history.
The place sits off the main roads and is reached via Route 614, with visitors able to walk between the various historic sites on foot. The simple, quiet surroundings allow for a relaxed stroll through the area, since there is little traffic and few shops.
Joe and Jeanette Carter, the children of A.P. and Sara, opened the Carter Fold, a music venue that continues to draw visitors today and keeps traditional music alive. This site was built on the side of Clinch Mountain and remains a vital place for live music, connecting the family and passing down their legacy.
