A. P. Carter Homeplace, Folk music birthplace in Maces Spring, United States.
The A. P. Carter Homeplace is a single-room log cabin built in 1891 with hand-fitted corners and a hidden staircase leading to the upper loft. The structure sits on a large property together with a historic store, both carefully maintained today.
Robert Carter built this log house in 1891 and it became the birthplace of his son A.P., who later founded the influential Carter Family music group. That family went on to shape folk music history in profound ways.
The house shows how Appalachian families built their homes and lived from farming in the late 1800s in Virginia. Walking through it gives a sense of the simple, hardworking life people led in this rural area at that time.
The site is reached via minor roads near Maces Spring and sits away from the main traffic of the area. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the grounds include dirt paths and natural terrain.
The log cabin was moved to its current location in 2004 to sit alongside the historic Carter Family store. This relocation brought two important family sites together in one place for visitors to experience.
