Bristol Virginia-Tennessee Slogan Sign, Steel frame sign at State Street intersection, Bristol, Tennessee.
The Bristol Virginia-Tennessee Slogan Sign is a 25-foot-tall illuminated steel frame structure at the State Street intersection that marks the boundary between the two cities. The sign spans across the street and uses a large number of light bulbs to display its message day and night.
The sign was first installed in 1910 by the Bristol Gas and Electric Company with the message 'PUSH! - THAT'S BRISTOL'. It was moved to its current location in 1915 to better mark the state boundary.
The message 'A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE' was chosen through a public competition in 1921, expressing what both communities valued about their shared border town.
The sign is located at an easy-to-reach spot on State Street and can be viewed from both the Tennessee and Virginia sides. The lights turn on at dusk, so visiting in early evening gives you the best view of the illuminated message.
The sign was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it one of the few advertising signs recognized as a historic landmark. Its real importance lies in how it physically connects two towns that share the same name but sit on opposite sides of the state line.
