The Bristol Gas and Electric Company installed the sign in 1910 with the initial message 'PUSH! - THAT'S BRISTOL' before relocating it to the current position in 1915.
A public competition in 1921 selected the enduring message 'A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE', reflecting the community values of both Tennessee and Virginia residents.
The maintenance costs for the sign are divided between the cities of Bristol, Tennessee and Bristol, Virginia, with recent LED upgrades reducing electricity consumption.
The sign holds recognition on the National Register of Historic Places as a physical marker positioned exactly on the state line between Tennessee and Virginia.
