Matthew S. Quay House, National Historic Landmark in Beaver, Pennsylvania.
The Matthew S. Quay House is a painted brick residence with a hip roof and carved wooden brackets under the eaves and along the porch. The structure has been expanded with a smaller northern extension and a longer rear addition, both added by Quay himself.
The residence was built during the post-Civil War rebuilding period and served as the home of Matthew Stanley Quay from 1874 to 1904. These decades marked a time of economic development and growing political influence in the region.
The house displays architectural features from the post-Civil War era with design choices typical of residential buildings from that period in Pennsylvania. This language of design reflected how wealthy families in the region expressed their social standing through their homes.
The residence is located at 205 College Avenue and currently serves as office space, with visits available by appointment. It is advisable to contact ahead to arrange access and find the best time to visit.
Quay received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fredericksburg, reflecting his influence in the nation's public life. The fact that he personally shaped his residence through his own modifications shows his desire to create a home that expressed his success.
