Matthews State Forest, Protected forest in Grayson County, Virginia, US.
Matthews State Forest is a protected woodland area spanning approximately 566 acres, composed of mixed hardwood and pine forest with varied ecological zones. The property features trails and recreational areas that pass through these different forest types and environments.
The forest began through donations by Judge Jack Matthews and his wife Clare in the 1990s, expanded with additional land contributions over the following years. These gifts created the protected area that exists today.
The grounds include the Alice House from 1805 and a historic cemetery that mark where early families made their homes starting in the 1700s. These structures show how people lived in this area long before the forest was established.
The property offers about 11 miles of trails for exploring, with picnic facilities and parking areas at Wild Turkey Lane for visitors. Trail conditions are best during dry periods when the paths are easier to walk.
The forest contains research orchards focused on restoring the American chestnut tree and maintaining heirloom apple varieties. This work blends conservation with preserving rare plant genetics.
