Merchants' National Bank
Merchants' National Bank, National Historic Landmark bank in Grinnell, United States.
Merchants' National Bank is a banking structure in Grinnell featuring a rectangular form with intricate brick patterns in blue-black and golden brown tones. The exterior displays complex layered designs that create a warm, reddish-brown overall effect.
The building was completed in 1914 as one of eight Midwestern banking structures designed by architect Louis Sullivan late in his career. Its construction coincided with a period of economic growth and brought innovative design to the small town.
The building now serves as the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, maintaining its role as a social hub in the heart of town. People visit to learn about the region and connect with the local community.
The building is located downtown and can be visited with tours available on weekdays without much advance notice. Weekend visits require you to arrange a time beforehand by calling ahead.
The facade features a large round window surrounded by an oversized ornamental frame with stylized stone elements. Two winged lion sculptures are particularly striking, representing rare figurative decorations on a banking building from this period.
