Iowa Speedway, NASCAR racing circuit in Newton, United States
Iowa Speedway is a professional racing circuit in Newton, Iowa. The oval measures roughly 1.4 kilometers (7/8 mile) in length and the turns have banking between 12 and 14 degrees, while the grandstands provide seating for 30,000 spectators.
Construction started in 2005 and lasted about one year until completion. The first race took place in September 2006 and was won by Woody Howard.
The facility carries the name of Iowa and sits in a rural setting where farming and motor racing coexist side by side. Visitors from small towns across the Midwest gather here during race days and often spend the entire afternoon in the grandstands or camping areas surrounding the circuit.
The track sits on Rusty Wallace Drive not far from Interstate 80, making it easy to reach by car. Those coming from further away can use the Des Moines airport and continue the journey from there.
Ryan Briscoe set the lap record in 2008 and completed the fastest lap in just under 18 seconds. This time was set during an IndyCar race in May of that year and has remained unbeaten ever since.
