McLean Game Refuge, National Natural Landmark in Hartford County, Connecticut.

Description

McLean Game Refuge is a protected natural area spanning roughly 4400 acres across Hartford County, Connecticut. The land contains diverse habitats with metamorphic rock formations and is crisscrossed by more than 30 miles of marked hiking trails.

History

Senator George McLean acquired the land in the early 1930s and dedicated it to conservation. His action created a permanent protected zone for wildlife and natural resources in the region.

Culture

The refuge maintains strong connections to environmental education, providing opportunities for the public to learn about wildlife conservation and natural resource management.

Practical

Visitors can access more than 30 miles of marked hiking paths and may also use two horse trails. The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset.
