McLean Game Refuge, National Natural Landmark in Hartford County, Connecticut.

The McLean Game Refuge spans 4,400 acres of protected wilderness, featuring diverse landscapes with metamorphic rock formations and extensive trail networks across multiple ecosystems.

Senator George McLean established this conservation area in 1932, using his inheritance to purchase land and create a protected wildlife sanctuary for future generations.

The refuge maintains strong connections to environmental education, providing opportunities for the public to learn about wildlife conservation and natural resource management.

Visitors can access over 20 miles of marked hiking paths and two dedicated horse trails throughout the refuge from sunrise until sunset each day.

The land features the distinct Barn Door Hills, formed during the Triassic period, and serves as a nesting ground for numerous bird species including pileated woodpeckers.
