Mega-Gem, Aluminum sculpture at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, United States.
Mega-Gem is an aluminum sculpture shaped like a round-cut diamond resting on one facet in the campus courtyard. Its surface features 36 colored metal rosettes that decorate the entire work.
The sculpture was created in 1989 and gained recognition when shown at the Chicago International Art Exposition. It was subsequently acquired by the Indianapolis Museum of Art for permanent placement on the campus.
The sculpture sits within the campus as a work of contemporary art meant for students and visitors to encounter daily. It demonstrates how art can be woven into everyday spaces where people study and gather.
The work stands in a courtyard north of New York Street and is easy to reach on foot. It forms part of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail system and can be discovered while walking through the campus.
The sculpture required restoration in 1996 when the artist repainted the faded rosettes before it was permanently installed. This refresh restored the work to its current vibrant appearance.
