East Gate/West Gate, Abstract sculpture at Indiana University, United States
This steel sculpture consists of two interconnected spirals that twist upward and span about 40 feet across at their widest point. The smooth metal surface reflects light and surroundings while the paired forms create a balanced composition.
The piece was made in the early 1970s and initially stood elsewhere before becoming part of a city art collection. It found its current location on the university campus much later through a careful relocation process.
The sculpture brings together artistic traditions from different parts of the world through its abstract form. Visitors walking around the piece discover how its two spirals create different silhouettes and impressions from each viewpoint.
The sculpture stands on open campus ground and is easily accessible from outside, so visitors can walk past it at any time. The piece is weatherproof and remains on display year-round, so there are no particular visiting times to keep in mind.
The heavy metal form was transported by helicopter over the city during installation, an unusual method for placing artwork. This aerial delivery remains a memorable part of how the piece arrived at its current home.
