Monte Sano Mountain, Natural summit in Huntsville, Alabama.
Monte Sano Mountain is a summit near Huntsville, Alabama, rising to about 1,620 feet (494 meters) above sea level. Much of the summit area falls within Monte Sano State Park, which covers the ridge with a network of trails for hiking and biking, along with several viewpoints overlooking the city below.
The Hotel Monte Sano opened in 1886, drawing visitors who believed the mountain air could improve their health. A railway followed in 1888 to make the climb easier, but it shut down by 1896 after the hotel itself closed.
The name Monte Sano comes from Spanish and means "healthy mountain", a nod to the belief that the mountain air had healing properties. Today, visitors can still spot stone cottages from the 1930s scattered through the trees, built as part of a New Deal program and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The trails range from easy walks to more demanding routes, so it is worth checking the trail map before heading out to pick one that fits your pace. Arriving early in the morning tends to make parking easier and the paths less crowded, especially on weekends.
The mountain is home to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, a museum dedicated to the rocket research that took place in Huntsville during the 1950s. Finding a space museum on the same hill where people hike through the woods is something you rarely encounter anywhere else.
