Moss Lake Bog, Glacial bog natural landmark in Caneadea, United States.
Moss Lake Bog is a protected natural landmark featuring a kettle lake whose surface is almost entirely covered with living sphagnum moss. The site spans roughly 84 acres and demonstrates the geological legacy of glaciation in this region of New York.
This landscape took shape about 15,000 years ago when glacial ice retreated and left behind a water-filled depression surrounded by gravel. The area has since been designated a protected landmark to safeguard its natural processes.
The site takes its name from the lake and moss-covered wetland that dominate the landscape. Visitors walking the boardwalks encounter ecosystems adapted to highly acidic water, where few plants can survive.
Wooden boardwalks circle the site and provide safe passage over the wetland without damaging the fragile ecosystem. Plan your visit on dry days, as moisture and ground conditions affect the walkability of the trails.
The bog hosts carnivorous plants such as sundew and pitcher plants that actively trap insects to obtain nutrients the acidic water cannot provide. These remarkable adaptations are visible to visitors walking along the boardwalks.
