Mountain Island Lake

Mountain Island Lake is a reservoir created by damming the Catawba River northwest of Charlotte, with wooded shorelines and several inlets. The water body stretches across a large area with a varied landscape of forests and natural banks along its perimeter.

The lake was formed in 1924 when the Catawba River was dammed to power a hydroelectric station serving the growing region. This infrastructure became essential as the area around Charlotte developed.
